Jet Lag Can’t Slow Jonathan Asselin and Rosita Fly

Thirty-four Riders Get the Need for Speed

Langley, BC --- Riders tackled a long course with open gallops and careful combinations to post the fastest time of the day. The $10,000 Thunderbird Show Park Modified Grand Prix was a one-round speed class where rails down converted to time added and the top time would take it all.

Course designer, Peter Holmes, set an interesting course that gave riders an opportunity to choose options in track and fence height. Many of the horse-rider teams took advantage of the opportunity to incorporate some personal strategy.

The first clear round was posted by Lindsay Hitchner and Quipa LS, getting a straight time score of 88.45 to nudge Sutton Finch and Castlewellan out of the lead spot with 92.14. Just three rides later, Allen Kruger and Mrs. Quinn snatched the lead with 85.64 only to have it taken away by the next rider, Jaclyn Duff and Sebastiaan at 84.97.

Rich Fellers, of Oregon, with Santa Teresita Fantasma came close to Duff’s time, but two rails put him in to fifth with 91.28. Lindsay Hitchner and Campiola attempted to challenge, but had a late rail. So, it was Brie Etcheverry and Pilgrim Van De Paddapoel. That finally toppled Duff, posting a clear round and a time of 84.40.

Jonathan Asselin and Rosita Fly flew into the ring, going fast and forward to beat Etcheverry’s time by more than six seconds, at 77.97. Asselin brought two other horses into the ring, taking the opportunity to prepare them for the $75,000 Keg Steakhouse & Bar Grand Prix. As a member of the 2008 Canadian Olympic Show Jumping team, Asselin returned from Beijing on Friday and is set to be a spectator favourite on Sunday.
