Victoria Colvin and Trousseau are Victorious in the Small 15 and Under Junior Hunters

at the Kentucky Summer Classic

Lexington, KY --- Today marked the third day of competition at the Kentucky Summer Classic. The weather at the Kentucky Horse Park was sunny and beautiful. Junior riders began competing at 8 a.m. in the spacious Stonelea Ring, over an exciting course featuring many natural obstacles.

The first division of the day was the Small 15 and Under Junior Hunters. Victoria Colvin put in excellent rounds aboard Trousseau, owned by Scott Stewart of Wellington, FL, and rode away with the championship award. Paulena Johnson, of Bristol, VA, and her mount, Davis Cup, came away with the reserve championship prize.

Colvin found today’s courses difficult, but was able to step-up to the challenge. “Yesterday the courses were easier, because you didn’t have options or bending lines. Today it was harder because there was a handy, and there were harder jumps. The courses were a little scarier,” she described. “The lines were very forward, especially for Trousseau.”

Colvin continued, “I started riding him four months ago. Scott [Stewart] owns him, and he started letting me ride him. He’s very sweet, and he’s fairly easy. You really just let go. He has a wonderful automatic lead change!”

The next to compete were the Large 15 and Under Junior Hunters. Gatsby jumped beautifully across the natural obstacles with Colleen Holton, of Hillard, OH, in the irons, to secure the championship tricolor. The reserve championship prize was presented to Ali Boone, of Lexington, KY, and Mactier.

The third division of the day in the Stonelea Ring was the Large 16-17 Junior Hunters. Caroline Gottwald, of Richmond, VA, and Red Moon successfully garnered the championship ribbon. She smiled, “The trips both days were really fun. They rode forward but they were good. I like the jumps. It mixes it up a little bit, and makes it more exciting.” The future plans for Red Moon have not yet been decided, as Gottwald will be leaving in the fall to attend the University of Virginia.

The reserve championship tricolor was awarded to Katherine Newman and All The Answers, owned by Sherri Crawford of Atlanta, GA. Newman took home the reserve championship prize in the next division, the Small 16-17 Junior Hunters, this time aboard Lifetime Guarantee, owned by Craig Shegog of Lexington, KY.

“I liked the courses a lot. I love when they look a little more natural like they did today,” explained Newman. “Both of the horses I rode have really long strides and are scopey. All the Answers can jump a little bit high sometimes, but he went really well today. Lifetime Guarantee is pretty made, and pretty simple. I just canter around and have fun!”

Jennifer Waxman, of Chargin Falls, OH, and Zoom earned the championship prize in the Small 16-17 Junior Hunters. Waxman also rode Zoom in the $20,000 ASG Software Solutions USHJA International Hunter Derby last week during the Kentucky Summer Classic, and finished in the top twelve. “Today was good. He likes the natural obstacles. I thought it was nice to do a little bit of a change, something different in the hunters is always nice,” said Waxman.”

Waxman has been coming to the Kentucky Horse Shows as long as she can remember. “It’s very close to home. It’s a facility that only improves. I can do the grand prix here, and the show management always does a great job. I love it!” expressed Waxman.

Tomorrow the Amateur Owner riders will begin competing in the Stonelea Arena. Championship and reserve championship tricolors will be award on Sunday. Sunday will mark the final day of the Kentucky Summer Classic at the Kentucky Horse Park.
