Rich Champion in Investor’s Group Cup
June 26, 2008
Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta --- The opening night of the Spruce Meadows “Canada One” Tournament featured the return of the ‘Big Guns’ for the big jumping in the Investor’s Group Cup.
After a week off to surrender the Spruce Meadows grounds to junior and amateur riders for the Spruce Meadows “Skyliner”, the stars were out tonight and found the going to be very demanding over the Leopoldo Palacios (VEN) designed course. In a field that included World Cup, Olympic, Pan American and World Championship medalists one star shone brightest.
Rich Fellers (USA) of Wilsonville, Oregon continued his incredible 2008 season with his impressive Irish Bred stallion Flexible. The 2008 World Cup silver medalist posted the only clean round out of 36 entries. Jumping late in the entry, in the 28th slot, Fellers knew the opening night would be a real test. “Well you just have to trust your horse. I told Leopoldo that I thought it was a really tough course and it was. I just really trusted my horse,” said Fellers after his win.
Leading up to Feller’s lone clear Eric Lamaze (CAN) and Hickstead had led the way with just a single time fault on the 590 m course. Lamaze ended up settling for second place, ahead of the rest of his recently announced Olympic team mates. Of the nominated Canadian Olympians that competed Ian Millar placed 5th with Redefin, Mario Deslauriers was 17th with Obelix R, Jonathan Asselin finished 22nd with Rayana Chiara and Jill Henselwood came 24th with Black Ice.
