Canada’s Dressage Youth Set Their Sights on the North American Junior and Young Riders’ Championships

June 23, 2008

Ottawa, ON --- Dressage Canada is pleased to announce the riders who have declared their intention to vie for a spot on one of the teams that will represent Canada at the 2008 North American Junior and Young Riders’ Championships, to be held at The Colorado Horse Park in Parker, CO, July 29–August 3, 2008.

This will mark the third time that a Junior Championship is being held in conjunction with a Young Rider Championship and has proven to make for an exciting competition.

“I am impressed with the number of Juniors and Young Riders striving to achieve a team position for the NAJYRC in 2008. Our past success with the Youth Programs in Canada continues to establish a high standard of excellence in both horses and riders,” remarked Ali Buchanan, Dressage Canada Youth High Performance Chair. “I wish all the Declared Riders the best of luck in achieving their goals for the NAJYRC.”

Canadian Dressage riders enjoyed immense success at the 2007 edition of the NAJYRC, held in Lexington, VA. Canada’s Junior Dressage Team—comprised of Jade Deter of Kemptville, ON, Jaimie Holland of Caledon, ON, Sara Regehr of Vernon, BC, and Lindsay Seidel-Wassenaar of Bluffton, AB—won the Team Gold Medal. Deter then went on to make history when she became the first Canadian rider to win three gold medals at the same Championships. Riding her Westphalian gelding Mastermind, Deter led the Junior Dressage Team to a Gold Medal finish before taking Gold both the Individual Final, and the Freestyle Final.

In the Young Riders’ division, Alexandra Duncan of West Vancouver, BC was the Individual Silver Medalist, paired with her Holsteiner mare Elektra. The pair also took the Gold medal in the Young Riders’ Freestyle competition. In addition, Duncan’s teammates helped Canada dominate the Young Riders’ Freestyle, with Leah Wilson of Orangeville, ON, taking the Silver Medal with Westside Lady, while Julie Watchorn of Schomberg, ON rode her Hanoverian gelding Dobble Tyme to a Bronze Medal.
